Swap LTC to XMR: The Quiet, Cheap Route Into Monero
Bitcoin hogs the spotlight, but Litecoin gets you XMR with cent-level fees and ~10-minute confirmations.
Everyone writes about BTC to XMR. It's the famous route. But Bitcoin makes you pay miners real money and wait ~20 minutes for 2 confirmations before the swap even starts. If your goal is simply to end up holding XMR, Litecoin often does the same job for a few cents and confirms in about 10 minutes. At the time of writing, 5 LTC gets roughly 0.58 XMR on our rate panel — live quote applies. (Monero confirmation waits)
Why the pair works: LTC is transparent like Bitcoin — every payment sits in public forever. XMR hides sender, receiver, and amount by default. Moving LTC into XMR converts a linkable balance into a private one, and because LTC withdrawal fees from exchanges are tiny and confirmations are fast, it's the traditional 'middle leg' coin of the privacy playbook: buy a liquid coin, withdraw, swap. (how Monero fees work)
Step 1 — get a refund address first. If you're withdrawing LTC from an exchange account, set an LTC refund address from a wallet you control when creating the order. Without one, a failed swap refunds to the sending address — which belongs to the exchange, and that refund may never reach you. (recovering misdirected funds)
Step 2 — paste your XMR address. Use a wallet you control: Cake, Feather, or the official GUI. A subaddress starts with 8, a standard address starts with 4 — both are 95 characters. Paste it (never type a 95-character address by hand) and verify the first and last few characters against your wallet. No memo or payment ID is needed — Monero addresses are self-contained.
Step 3 — send and wait. Send the exact quoted amount in one transaction from the Litecoin network (beware exchange 'LTC' tokens on BSC or ERC-20 — those are not native LTC). Litecoin blocks arrive every ~2.5 minutes; expect the exchange leg to run after 1-4 confirmations. Total time for the pair is typically 10-25 minutes end to end. (Monero confirmation waits)
Rate notes: fixed quotes lock at order creation and usually carry a slightly wider spread — useful because Monero itself settles at 10 confirmations (~20 minutes), which presses against any quote window. Floating follows the market until deposit confirmation. If your order supports it, fixed takes the timing risk off the table for a fraction of a percent. (how Monero privacy works)
One MWEB caution: Litecoin's optional privacy layer (MWEB, addresses starting ltcmweb1) must be pegged out to the main chain before it can pay a normal deposit address — that's a two-step process with its own confirmation wait. If your LTC sits in MWEB, peg out first, then send from the regular address.
After the XMR lands, standard Monero hygiene applies: fresh subaddress per transaction, wallet sync over Tor, and the seed backup routine from our previous article. The swap is the easy part — the habits are the privacy. (seed backup guide)
